User Unable to Open Orion - Error Message Contains Access Violation Read Of Address 00000008

  • Updated

If a User is unable to open Orion and they receive an error similar to “Access violation at address 04D711AB in module 'OrionDesktop.exe'. Read of address 00000008", the problem is a corrupt registry entry that holds the user’s Orion Side Bar settings.  The key to this error is the last part: “Read of Address 00000008" - the first part of the error message may vary depending on the release you are running.

This works with Access Violation Read of Address 00000000 error as well when trying to access the Admin program.

To correct this problem, the Registry Key containing the Orion Side Bar settings will have to be deleted.  Once deleted, the user will be able to enter Orion and the default Side Bar settings will be loaded.

This procedure must be performed on the user’s workstation and should only be done by the Firm’s IT department or an Orion Support Representative.  If in doubt, please call Orion Support and we will handle this for you.  Extreme care must be taken while in the Windows Registry Editor.

To delete the corrupt Registry Entry, take the following steps:

    1.    Access the Windows Registry Editor (click the Windows START Button, choose Run and type in Regedit or click the Windows START Button and in the Search field type in Regedit.

    2.    Once the Windows Registry Editor is open, access HKEY_CURRENT_USER\SOFTWARE\ORION\DESKTOP\SIDEBAR.  The window below is a sample of what your screen may look like once you have reached the necessary section of the Windows Registry.

    3.    Click on the SideBar key (highlighted in screen above) and strike the DELETE key on your keyboard.  Confirm to delete the key and all its subkeys.  DO NOT delete anything else in the Registry.

    4.    Close the Registry Editor and try to open Orion again.  The program will recognize there are no Side Bar settings and load the default Side Bar as defined for the User’s Security Group.
