Orion Law Management Orion Desktop Articles Reporting Client-Matter Retainer Ledger Updated April 14, 2025 18:45 The Client-Matter Retainer Ledger can produce either a history of retainer activity or a summary (balance only) of retainer activity for Client-Matters. When run for all Client-Matters, the report will include all matters where there is a retainer balance, even if no activity occurred in the report date range. The summary option shows only the balance and the detail option shows the detail activity within the report date range. This report would be run for all Client-Matters (or all Responsible Attorneys) to balance to your General Ledger Unapplied Retainers account. When printing the report for balances only, the recommended way to run the Summary Style or the Summary with Date of Last Activity Style is with a one day date range. Note that this report reads ALL retainer activity regardless of the date range entered. Therefore, it can take some time to run. If you are looking for a quick report to show current balances, run the Retainer and Trust Balances Report found under the Client-Matter Reports section. Every time the report is run, the system gathers all retainer activity on the Client-Matter file through the end date and returns the balance as of that date. If a Client-Matter has activity within the date range specified, they will show in the report - even if the ending balance is $0.00. Therefore, if you are running the report in order to show all balances as of a certain date and you do not want detail activity, run the Summary option or the Summary with Date of Last Activity option using a one day date range equal to the date on which you want the balances. This will cut down on $0.00 balance Client-Matters listing on the report. Was this article helpful? Yes/No
